Charlotte NC Jobless Rate on the Decline, May 2011
As discussed in previous articles regarding Charlotte’s position as the nation’s second largest financial hub, the city has begun the move to grow well beyond being known only as a financial hub. With the financial sector cutting jobs, our largest single employer remains Carolinas Healthcare Systems, parent company to several local hospitals as well as many physician practices in the Charlotte Metro area and beyond.
Charlotte is growing in professional and business services, hospitality and trade, transportation and utilities, including multiple new energy sector headquarters/offices moving to the area. Employment in the Charlotte metro area increased by 8,200 jobs since March, 2011.
Charlotte area unemployment rate fell again last month, as did the majoity of the state, as more workers are finding jobs. The Charlotte Metro region’s jobless rate fell from 10.4% in March to 10.3% in April, according to data released Friday by the NC Employment Security Commission. This may not seem like much of a drop but, the figure is down from 11.1% in April 2010.
Rates fell in 73 of North Carolina‘s 100 counties as well, increased in 10 NC counties and remained the same in 17. Rates decreased in 10 of the state’s metro statistical areas and remained the same in four.
In Mecklenburg County alone, the jobless rate fell to 9.8% in April from 10% in March. Our county’s unemployment rate one year ago, April 2010 was 10.1%.
