Google Fiber Picks Charlotte – Great news for our economy
“Officials from the technology giant and the city said the next step is a detailed design process, followed by a massive, sometimes disruptive construction project.”
GREAT news for Charlotte! One of 9 cities chosen – with our high demographic for technology, we were certain during the one-year wait that we would be chosen – and with no incentives or subsidies.
Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter feels the Google decision will spur economic development, boost entrepreneurship and bring in competition which will improve the city’s Internet access and offer better service from all providers.
Google Fiber means a much faster Internet experience for consumers in the cities it will be in.
The technology allows downloads at incredible speeds (1,000 megabits [1 gigabit]/second as compared to basic broadband of 10-20 megabits/second). Uploads of larger graphics/photos, videos and other large files typically not only slow down the user but, also strains the entire network.
As an example, Lo said a geneticist in Provo, Utah, using Google Fiber can now download an entire genome in less than half an hour. It used to take 77 hours.
It is unknown when the groundwork will begin so, we must remain patient. Let the Google Fiber-laying begin!
