Bank of America Stadium – Home of the Carolina Panthers
75,525-seat-seat football stadium, home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers & a whole host of college teams and events is located on 33 acres in Charlotte’s Uptown area.
Completed in 1996 and opening originally as Ericsson Stadium, this venue was known to locals as Carolinas Stadium (named for both states, North & South Carolina) for 8 years. Naming rights were later purchased by Charlotte’s own Bank of America (corporate headquarters) in 2004. Those rights were purchased through 2024.
Each of the stadium’s entrances are flanked on both sides by two enormous bronze panther statues. These statues are unique throughout the entire NFL and are all named “Indomitable Spirit.” Installed in 1996 upon completion of stadium construction, each statue depicts a crouching, snarling panther with green eyes. A little trivia tidbit that you may not know – these statues are the largest sculptures ever commissioned in the United States.
The Bank of America stadium features no bad seats and all attendees have ready access to concessions and stadium entries/exits. This popular venue is not only host to our beloved Carolina Panthers but, has held several NFL playoff games, many college football games, including the annual Belk Bowl (formerly the Meineke Car Care Bowl and the Continental Tire Bowl).
In its inaugural season, the stadium served as host for a four-day Billy Graham crusade. Other events include soccer (the other futball!) tournaments and a multitude of concerts. Because the Bank of America stadium is open air with natural grass, Spectrum Arena is and has been the back-up venue for concerts and large non-sporting events.
