Union County School Report Card FEB 2015
For the first year in North Carolina, public and charter schools received letter grades, based on a 15-point scale, grades A – F this week. The North Carolina General Assembly approved the change in the state’s grading system in the 2013 session.
Although Union County schools ranked quite well among other NC schools, Union County officials warn that no single letter grade accurately reflects the abundance of opportunities provided in each and every school in the county. Bear in mind that state testing does not completely reflect the abilities of all students; in fact, some are in favor of reducing the number of tests that are now required in the Union County schools. Should schools be ‘judged’ on their merit by a single letter grade? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
The Maxwell House Group highly recommends that if you are considering relocating to a particular neighborhood, check out the schools yourself before even looking at homes in that particular neighborhood. We don’t feel that a school can be judged based on the letter grade alone – there are many other factors that come into play.
The new grading system is based upon the proficiency of students in both reading and math as well as distinguishing academic progress. Achievement and growth on an 80% achievement/20% growth formula are used to calculate each school’s final grade. Grades were earned based on this 15-point scale:
A = 85-100
B = 70-84
C = 55-69
D = 40-54
F=<40
The 15-point scale will eventually change to a 10-point scale. The following chart reflects grades posted FEB 2015 but, are for the 2013-2014 school year.
