What are Those Blue Rocking Chairs Across the Queen City?
The City of Charlotte’s Placemaking Program is making a mark on the city with an unusual but, delightful display to celebrate Charlotte’s 250 years.
The newly-formed organization dropped 100 rocking chairs across the city today, to celebrate Charlotte’s 250th anniversary and to invite residents to collaborate in placemaking efforts.
Sit and relax a bit in the new chairs and share ideas as to how to transform under-utilized public spaces into vibrant, useful places for all. The program’s mission is to create spaces in Charlotte, giving a sense of identity and place for everyone.
“We chose rocking chairs as a symbol of the city’s charm, encouraging people to stop and take in the environment, and celebrate their public spaces,” said Monica Holmes, placemaking manager Charlotte’s Urban Design Center. “We want to build on the city’s welcoming reputation while encouraging Charlotteans to explore the possibilities of shaping our community together.”
Each rocking chair displays the web address for the City of Charlotte’s Placemaking Program which points neighborhoods, communities and businesses to public enhancement resources, including:
- Funding opportunities,
- Emerging artist opportunities
- Tools to implement projects in public spaces.
The rocking chairs will remain in place until the end of December, 2019. The chairs can be found in 25 locations Uptown and in all 7 of the City Council Districts. The map below shows all of the locations of the celebratory rocking chairs:
Charlotte’s Placemaking Program aggregates tools available through Urban Design, CDOT, Housing & Neighborhood Services and Engineering & Property Management
Are the blue rockers Carolina Blue or Duke Blue? Neither! If anything, the chairs are more Panther blue! So, take a seat, rest a spell, collaborate with your neighbors and celebrate our amazing community.
Join in the fun by posting your own pictures on social media using the hashtag #RockwithCLT.
